1 John 3:20 AMPC Whenever our hearts in [tormenting] self-accusation make us feel guilty and condemn us. [For we are in God’s hands.] For He is above and greater than our consciences (our hearts), and He knows (perceives and understands) everything [nothing is hidden from Him].
Today we will discover four primary enemies of the heart—four life-blocking agents that become lodged in the heart, poisoning our relationships, our faith, and our character.
Secrecy is their greatest ally. Left to their own, they grow in power and influence. But as we will discover, these forces lose their power when exposed to light.
Exposing the four enemies of a healthy heart
#1 Guilt: I owe you!
Guilt is the result of having done something we perceived as wrong.
Every wrong we do can be restated as an act of theft.
Proverbs 22:7 NLT Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.
“In other words, authority belongs to those who are owed, not those who owe.
Motivated out of a debt to debtor relationship. A guilty heart attempts to buy love through excessive materialism or to buy peace by failing to set appropriate boundaries for our children or relationships.
But no amount of good deeds, charitable giving, or Sundays in a pew can relieve the guilt. It’s a “debt.” And it must be paid or canceled for a guilty heart to experience relief.
#2 Anger: You owe me!
Ungodly anger is the result of not getting something we want.
99.9% of the time, what we want is what we feel we deserve!
This is why often our response when angered is payback!
An angry heart spends most of its time waiting for a debt to be paid that cannot be paid.
When ungodly anger is lodged in a heart, then before long, we come to believe that everybody owes me.
Read 1 Peter 3:9 AMPC
#3 Greed: I owe me!
It’s hard to get a greedy person to part with money or stuff. Why? Because it’s theirs. And they’re scared to live without owning it!
Fear is the driving force behind greed. Fear fuels greed.
Read Luke 12:15 AMPC
Greedy people talk a lot and worry a lot about money.
Greedy people are not cheerful givers. Giving is something they have to do instead of something they get to do!
Greedy people are poor losers.
Greed isn’t a financial issue; it’s a heart issue.
#4 Jealousy: God owes me!
Jealousy is the belief that if God had taken as good care of me as He has some people I know; my life would be better/richer.
The reason the people you envy can do nothing to remedy your feelings is that they are not your problem; it’s with your Creator. He owes you.
Until you find a way to deal with your jealous heart, you’ll be unable to follow the most basic command of God. Love one another!
God’s response is not to heal our hearts, but to give us a new one altogether!
Ezekiel 36:26-27 AMPC 26 A new heart will I give you and a new spirit will I put within you, and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you shall heed My ordinances and do them.
